CUDDALORE – A devastating incident unfolded this morning near Semmankuppam, Cuddalore, as a passenger train collided with a school van, resulting in the tragic deaths of at least two children. Several others, including the school van driver, sustained injuries and have been rushed to the Cuddalore Government General Hospital.
The accident occurred at a railway level crossing (Gate No. 170), reportedly a manned gate, between Cuddalore and Alappakkam. Preliminary reports indicate that the school van, belonging to a private CBSE school, was attempting to cross the tracks when it was struck by Train No. 56813, the Villupuram–Mayiladuthurai passenger train.
Eyewitnesses and initial inquiries have presented conflicting accounts regarding the circumstances leading to the collision. Some reports suggest that the gate was open at the time of the incident, with allegations of negligence on the part of the gatekeeper. Conversely, railway officials have stated that while the gatekeeper was in the process of closing the gate, the van driver insisted on crossing, which should not have been permitted.
The impact of the collision was severe, causing significant damage to the school van. Emergency services swiftly responded to the scene, and the injured were immediately transported for medical attention.
This heartbreaking event has sparked outrage among local residents, who have gathered at the site demanding stricter safety measures at railway crossings, particularly those frequented by school vehicles. Railway and district authorities have initiated a formal investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident and to ascertain accountability.
Our thoughts are with the families affected by this profound loss. Further updates will be provided as the investigation proceeds.
